Submit Your Story (Page 3 of 7)

Before You Write Your Story

We want your story about how you made a suicide attempt and how you found reasons to go on living. Since we will be unable to ask follow-up questions, the following are some suggested topics to include in your story. You are, of course, encouraged to include whatever you feel is important so that we can understand your experience as completely as possible. The more details you provide, the richer our understanding of your experience will be.

Suggested topics:

  • describe your life before you became suicidal and perhaps some events you feel were significant.
  • explain how you became suicidal.
  • describe your circumstances, thoughts and feelings before, during and after the suicide attempt.
  • help us to understand the process of recovery for you, and how you decided to continue living.
  • include your Reasons to go on Living.

Please provide real details and true information in your story. You may want to change names for confidentiality purposes. We will have no way of checking the information you send, but it will be most helpful for our research if you include accurate information. Any possibly identifying details will be changed if your story is posted on this website or published in another form.

We cannot respond to individual stories. Only stories about surviving a suicide attempt will be used for research purposes.

You may want to write your story using a word processing program before completing the submission process. You can take as much time as you need to write your story and then return to this website. On the final “submit your story” page you can enter your story into the text box by typing it in, using “cut and paste” from your word processor program, or by sending the story as an attachment. By writing your story off-line you can be certain it includes everything you want to tell us. Please note that if you are attaching a file, the maximum size is 500 KB.
