Submitting Your Story Info

The Reasons to go on Living Project needs your story. If you have made a suicide attempt or seriously considered suicide and now want to go on living, we want to hear from you. We want to learn how you recovered and found reasons to go on living.

This is both a public education project and a research project, so please keep the following in mind:

  1. All stories are submitted anonymously. That means we have no idea who sent each story or where it came from.
  2. Your story will be read carefully and treated with respect.
  3. If your story is posted on this website or published in another form, any possible identifying details will be changed. We may need to shorten or edit your story.
  4. If your submission is not a story about your suicide attempt and your recovery, it cannot be used.
  5. We are not able to contact the authors of stories, even if you ask for help. If you are in crisis, please click here.
  6. The events, thoughts and feelings you write about will always belong to you but by providing the written story and by participating in the Project, you are giving us permission to edit, publish and use your written story in any way that we feel will meet the purpose of the Project.
  7. Each person is asked to send only one story.
  8. You may find it easier to write your story off-line so that you can take time to include all the details and information you want. You can then copy and paste it into the submit your story now box on this website.

There are a number of steps involved in submitting your story. When you click on submit your story now you will go through the following pages:

  1. The steps involved in submitting your story
  2. Some suggestions and information to keep in mind before you write your story. These include:
    • A note that we cannot respond to individual stories
    • A reminder that only stories about surviving a suicide attempt will be used in the Project for research or educational purposes. Stories that are not about a suicide attempt or serious thoughts about suicide will not be used.
    • A request to provide real details and true information in your story.
    • A reminder that any identifying details will be changed if your story is posted on the web or published elsewhere.
    • A suggestion to write your story off-line before proceeding so you can be sure your story includes everything you feel is important.
  3. A consent document that includes detailed information about The Reasons to go on Living Project and your involvement in the process.
  4. A question asking you if you have read and understood the consent document. You must agree in order to participate.
  5. A question asking you if you want to participate in this research and education program by submitting your story. You must agree to this in order to send us your story.
  6. A question to be sure you understand that the documented story becomes the property of the Project for the purposes of editing, publishing or using the document. You must agree to this in order to proceed.
  7. Submit your story! You can type in your story or send us an attachment.
  8. Each story will be given a number. The number will be displayed on the screen, and you can remember it or write it down if you want. All stories that are posted online or published will include their number, so you will be able to see if it is your story.
  9. Our thanks for participating in The Reasons to go on Living Project.
  10. A few questions about how you found out about the Project and about submitting your story.

Please consider submitting your story. We would like to understand your experience and how you found reasons to go on living. If you are ready to begin, click here
